A pie iron is an old form of technology that is still being used today. The iron has a clever design consisting of two iron plates connected with a hinge. When sealed, the iron can cook any food placed inside of it. Some interesting recipes can be made with the iron, and here are a few of them.
Fruit pies are a quick, go to snack for many people. While the store bought ones are delicious, the ones that come from a pie iron are even better. To make them, all that is needed is bread and pie filling from a can. Simply put a little pie filling between two pieces of bread and put it in the pie iron and cook it over a heat source. The pie iron will make a toasty, fruity treat that is sealed around the edges. The best thing about making fruit pies this way is that users can choose what ever fruit filling they want, and even mix them together to create new flavors.
A quick pie iron lunch can be made from a modified version of the classic tuna sandwich. First, a can of tuna, mayonnaise, and chopped pickles should be combined like in a regular tuna salad. Butter two slices of bread and place one side butter down on the iron. Put some of the tuna mixture on the bread, along with a tomato slice and a Havarti cheese slice. Top with the other piece of bread and let it cook in the pie iron. Once it’s done, the cheese will be perfectly melted and the toasted bread will compliment the tuna well.
A pie iron can even make a mini pizza pocket. Regular sliced bread can be used for this, but if pizza crust, pita bread, or English muffins are available, they can make fine substitutes that will offer nice flavor variations. Start with one piece of bread on the base of the iron and add some tomato puree, chopped garlic, green peppers, oregano, mozzarella cheese, and a little bit of pepperoni. Add the second bread slice on top and cook the pizza in the pie iron for around four minutes.
